Peter Obi drops surprise declaration ahead of 2027 presidential polls

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, has said his primary ambition is to see Nigeria function effectively rather than simply become president.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, aired on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said he would support any government capable of delivering meaningful progress for the country.

"I've always said I'm not desperate to be Nigerian president. I'm desperate to see Nigeria work. So if it's working, I'll support whatever makes it work," Obi said.

He said his vision for Nigeria was one in which merit, rather than connections, determines success, and where young people have access to employment and business opportunities.

Obi maintained that holding public office was not an end in itself, arguing that his decision to contest the presidency stems from his belief that he can address the country's challenges.

"I don't even need to hold any post. I'm contesting because I believe that I will fix it. I will unite the country," he said.

The former governor also rejected claims that his presidency would deepen divisions in the country. His comments came in response to remarks by former Borno State governor Ali Modu Sheriff, who had questioned Obi's ability to unite Nigeria.

Obi Cites Nationwide Engagements

Defending his record, Obi said he had consistently engaged with communities across different regions of the country, including areas affected by conflict.

"I will unite Nigeria, and I know what it takes to unite Nigeria," he said, adding that he had visited internally displaced persons' camps, travelled to communities in Benue State on several occasions, and spent Christmas and New Year with displaced persons.

He also cited development projects he said he had supported in northern Nigeria, including the construction of boreholes in several states and assistance to the agricultural faculty at Usmanu Danfodiyo University.

Obi further said he had visited schools, hospitals and communities across the South-West and North-Central regions, insisting that his nationwide engagements demonstrate a long-standing commitment to national cohesion.

His remarks come as political activity ahead of the 2027 general election gradually gathers momentum, with prospective candidates beginning to outline their priorities and respond to criticism over their suitability for the country's highest office.
